The Global Chemical Billion Dollar Club list is out

The latest ranking of the Global Chemical Billion Dollar Club for 2021 was recently announced by Chemical Weekly. Based on the 2020 chemical business sales of the finalists, a total of 100 companies in this year's ranking qualified by having sales of more than US$2.8 billion from their chemical business. BASF is again the world's largest chemical manufacturer by 2020 sales, followed by Dow Chemical and Sinopec. Sales revenues of chemical companies generally fell last year due to reduced demand as a result of the Newcastle pneumonia pandemic and production shutdowns.

Little change in top five ranking

In 2020, a year marked by a global pandemic and an exceptionally difficult external environment, BASF continued to hold the top spot in the industry with sales revenue of US$73,023 million. It is also the tenth time in the last 13 years that the German chemical giant has been on top. Despite all the challenges in 2020, the top five chemical companies in the ranking remain the same as in 2019: BASF, Sinopec, Dow Chemical, Formosa Plastics Group and ExxonMobil. Sinopec remains in second place in the ranking with US$57,042 million in chemical sales revenue, although Sinopec's chemical sales revenue is down a significant 25% from 2019; Dow Chemical remains in third place in the ranking with US$38,542 million in sales revenue, down 10% from 2019 in 2020; Formosa Plastics Group rose to the top of the ranking with US$34,715 The company's chemical sales revenue of US$34.715 billion rose to the fourth position on the list, up one position compared with the previous year; ExxonMobil's chemical sales revenue of US$33.071 billion fell to the fifth position on the list, down one position compared with the previous year.
